Many regard Johnny Whiteley the greatest and most popular Hull born player of all time.

He played 15 seasons for Hull F.C. making 417 Appearances scoring 156 Tries and 2 Goals for at total of 472 Points.

He captained Hull F.C. from 1956 and became player coach in October 1963. He carried on coaching Hull F.C. after his last appearance as a player, at Warrington on 6th February 1965 until the end of the 1969/70 season.

Johnny made 15 Test and World Cup appearances for Great Britain and in 1958 was a member of the tour squad that retained the Ashes in Australia. He was a member of the last (to date - 10/04/2006) G.B. squad to beat Australia on home soil in the 1959 test series. He was a member of the 1962 G.B. team (regarded by many as the greatest ever touring team) which won the ashes in Australia.

He coached the G.B. squad that toured Australia in 1970 and they were the last to win the Ashes in Australia. He left Hull F.C. on his return to coach Hull Kingston Rovers until leaving them in 1972. He then carried on coaching the Yorkshire side for 12 years.

He was then recalled to coach G.B. in 1980 for two years.
Leaving to run his business and coach youngsters, which he has carried on doing to the present day.

In his nearly 3 hour interview for the National Archive, Johnny tells about growing up during the 2nd World War in Hull. Playing for Hull Boys Club and joining the Army for his National Service. Fulfilling his dream and signing and playing for Hull F.C. and then being picked to play for Great Britain. He talks about coaching Hull and G.B. the ups and downs and much much more, leaving us with a fascinating insight into the ins and outs of Rugby League in an historic period.
